OCEAN COLOR FROM EARTHCARE MEASUREMENTS: THE OCEAN PROJECT
Over the last twenty years, a wide range of studies has highlighted the distinctive and essential contribution of spaceborne lidar observations to Ocean Color research. In this framework, the OCEAN project (Ocean Color EarthCARE ANalysis) is currently being carried out as a 24-month feasibility study, launched in June 2025 and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) through the EarthCARE+ Innovation programme.
The project is designed to take advantage of the advanced observational capabilities and derived products of the ATLID lidar onboard the EarthCARE mission. It builds upon the expertise and methodological developments achieved within the ESA-funded COLOR project, which employed Aeolus data to investigate Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM). In particular, Using the High Spectral Resolution Lidar and polarization retrieval techniques, OCEAN is aimed at retrieving key ocean optical parameters, including the diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance, Kd(355), and the subsurface hemispherical particulate backscattering coefficient, bbp. This contribution presents the first results obtained within the framework of the OCEAN project.
