ABSTRACT 1093 | POSTER 97

OCEAN LIDAR STUDY (OLIS): PHASE 0 FOR A BLUE-GREEN OCEANIC PROFILING LIDAR SPACE MISSION

An uninterrupted record of global ocean color data has been sustained since 1997. These passive observations have enabled a global view of the distribution of marine particles and suspended materials. However, these measurements are limited to clear sky, day-light, high Sun elevation angles over ice-free oceans, and are exponentially weighted toward the ocean surface. Lidar technique can help to overcome some of these limitations. Unfortunately, there are currently no space-borne lidars dedicated to ocean observations. The past and current space-borne lidars, even if proved to contain valuable information for ocean studies, do not have the characteristics necessary to study the upper-ocean layer in detail. We present preliminary results from a Phase 0 study aimed at the definition of a space-borne mission based on a blue-green lidar at 486 and 532 nm. The study started in September 2025 and is funded by the European Space Agency. The project is comprised of six work packages in order to generate, as deliverables, a Mission Definition Document and a Mission Assumptions and Technical Requirements Document. Different scenarios are investigated and quantitatively documented from a minimal configuration (elastic at 486 and 532 nm) to a groundbreaking configuration (HSRL at 486 and 532 nm with dual polarization and chlorophyll-a fluorescence at 685 nm). Advancements on the lidar characteristics, lidar simulator and technological developments will be presented.
