STUDYING PHYSICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL CONTEXT OF MARINE BIOLUMINESCENCE IN THE NORTHWESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA USING IN SITU GLIDERS AND SATELLITE MEASUREMENTS
In all oceans, every time, bioluminescence exists. This emitted light is weak and usually not observed by the human eye because it is hidden by the ambient light. However, bioluminescence, which is a function of a majority of marine organisms indicating their potential presence and interactions, can be recorded by dedicated sensors in all the water column. The BIOLUMOPS project (2024-2026) aims at mapping the spatiotemporal distribution of bioluminescence in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea from the ocean surface down to 600 meters. For that, three sea surveys of about 12 days each occurred in March 2025, August 2025 and March 2026 in the Gulf of Lion. Each time 3 SEAEXPLORER gliders were deployed. One glider is equipped with a Seabird/UBAT bioluminescence sensor. Another has PAR, FL-CHLA, BB, FL-CDOM and ADCP sensors. A third has a Hydroptic/UVP6 zooplankton camera. All gliders are fitted with CTD sensors. We present these data recorded in conjunction with Sentinel-3/OLCI, Sentinel-2/MSI and Landsat 8-9/OLI images and the general currents. For instance, we observe that bioluminescence intensities increase on the edges of eddies. Based on these data we also propose several empirical models of predicting bioluminescence intensities with concomitant physical and biogeochemical parameters. More generally we advocate for systematic measurement of bioluminescence by the ocean colour community, as it can contribute in monitoring biodiversity changes and could also be an early warning sign of some HABs caused by dinoflagellates. But we deplore a lack of low-cost bioluminescence sensors available on the market.
