TOWARDS AN AUTONOMOUS INTEGRATED SHIPBORNE ABOVE-WATER SPECTROMETER SYSTEM
Above-water radiometry is applied for aquatic reflectance measurements on ships, including integration with Ferrybox systems, yet operational deployment remains constrained by several factors. These include minimisation of sunglint contamination, optimisation of sensor geometry and mounting location to avoid platform-induced shading or obstruction, and the need to limit crew involvement in system operation and maintenance.
We evaluated a fully autonomous above-water WISPstation spectrometer system deployed on a Rijkswaterstaat patrol vessel operating in Lake Volkerak-Zoommeer (the Netherlands). The system acquired radiance and irradiance measurements over a four-month period without crew interaction or interference with vessel operations. Having a dual-viewing geometry with the radiance sensors positioned at different azimuth angles relative to the sun, it follows principles consistent with Fiducial Reference Measurement (FRM) protocols to minimise sunglint effects. This configuration ensured that at least one observation per measurement cycle met angular constraints for valid remote sensing reflectance retrieval. The system collected an average of 95 measurements per day, of which approximately 75 passed quality control filtering.
These results demonstrate the viability of fully autonomous, high-frequency above-water radiometry observations on operational vessels. Within the Horizon Europe OASIS project, a next-generation prototype will be developed, comprising port and starboard radiance sensors mounted at the bow, a mast-mounted irradiance sensor, and an integrated processing and communication unit, enabling FRM-aligned ocean colour observations across diverse vessel classes.
Scalable deployment of such systems has the potential to provide substantial volumes of high-quality in situ data to support calibration and validation of satellite platforms and derived information services.
