NASA’S GLIMR MISSION CAPTURING OCEAN COLOUR DYNAMICS AT DIURNAL TIMESCALES: PRE-LAUNCH RADIOMETRIC CALIBRATION AND PERFORMANCE

With its vantage point from geostationary orbit, NASA’s Geostationary Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer (GLIMR) will be the first hyperspectral ocean colour sensor in the Western Hemisphere to study ocean processes at the diurnal timescales required to observe the dynamic ecological, biogeochemical and physical processes within coastal and ocean waters. GLIMR is uniquely designed to capture the temporal and spatial evolution of phytoplankton blooms, which grow and dissipate on scales of hours to days, monitor phytoplankton growth rates and shifts in community composition, resolve coastal features, fronts, eddies and upwelling areas, and monitor biogeochemical fluxes and land-ocean exchanges at sub-diurnal to multi-day scales. At the heart of the GLIMR instrument is a spectrometer with a nadir ground sample distance of 300 m, spectral range between 340-1040nm, and capability to scan the Gulf of America (aka Gulf of Mexico) within 70 minutes enabling six scans per day at a high SNR performance. GLIMR will acquire hyperspectral radiances at 250+ channels between 340-1040 nm at spectral resolution of ~2 nm to 20 nm, respectively, for production of a suite of standard and advanced data products. This presentation will describe the science aims, data products planned, and results from the instrument’s pre-launch radiometric calibration and characterization. GLIMR is poised to revolutionize our understanding of phytoplankton, ocean productivity, land-estuary-ocean exchanges and dynamics of carbon and sediments, biology-physics interactions at sub-mesoscale, detection and prediction of harmful algal bloom evolution, oil spill thickness and extent, and much more. NASA plans to launch GLIMR by 2028.
