PRIMARY PRODUCTION AROUND OFFSHORE WIND FARMS IN THE SOUTHERN NORTH SEA

Investigating primary production dynamics is vital to have a comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystem functioning. Primary producers form the basis of the foodweb, and any changes can lead to cascading effects to higher trophic levels. The North Sea is facing increased anthropogenic pressures; as part of the sustainable energy transition offshore windfarms will likely have to expand. However, the presence of wind turbines can change mixing of the water through introducing turbid wakes, affecting environmental conditions such as turbidity and stratification and also grazing pressures. Primary producers are largely dependent on light, and nutrient availability from deeper layers, and both processes are influenced by mixing. To understand these impacts, remote sensing plays a useful role, facilitating primary production modelling on wide temporal and spatial scales. However, the North Sea’s complex waters complicate the estimate of primary production with satellite data. To optimise Case 2 primary production models, we are conducting bio-optical shipborne measurements of primary production (applying an underway LabSTAF system), pigments, SPM, CDOM, phytoplankton functional types and spectroradiometry in a range of hydrogeographic regions in the southern North Sea. Moreover, we are expanding these measurements inside and just outside offshore wind farms. Our preliminary findings compare satellite derived chlorophyll concentrations with LabSTAF surface measurements and HPLC chlorophyll concentrations of water column samples in and outside Dutch offshore wind farms.
