ANALYSIS OF PHENOLOGICAL VARIATION IN SARGASSUM HORNERI INFLUX IN THE YELLOW SEA AND EAST CHINA SEA USING GOCI-II

The Yellow Sea and East China Sea have the world’s largest supply of floating algae. The golden tides (Sargassum horneri) pose a significant socioeconomic problem in coastal areas. This study was conducted to precisely characterize the phenological variability of Sargassum horneri—from its initial occurrence to its influx and eventual disappearance—utilizing data from the geostationary ocean color satellite, GOCI-II. To understand spatial and temporal variations, GOCI-II was used to detect floating macroalgae, which were quantified using the AFAI, and the results were mapped over the study area. Environmental drivers at each phenological stage were analyzed by integrating sea surface temperature. The analysis revealed a consistent pattern: Sargassum horneri initiates growth along the Chinese coast during the winter and enters the pelagic stage around March. The biomass entering the waters near the Korean Peninsula peaks between late April and early May. Subsequently, as water temperatures rise, most colonies disappear by late June. Notably, case studies of massive bloom events in specific years identified that abnormally high winter SST and shifts in monsoonal winds are key factors that advance the timing of detachment and amplify the volume of the influx. These findings will serve as a fundamental data set for monitoring phenological changes in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea driven by climate change.
