SENSITIVITY OF VARIOUS HYPERSPECTRAL SATELLITE SENSOR CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE QUANTIFICATION OF PHYTOPLANKTON GROUPS AND BULK PARAMETERS ACROSS THE GLOBAL OPTICAL WATER TYPES
Monitoring of optical water constituents, such as concentrations of chlorophyll (CHL) of all and specific phytooplankton groups (PFT), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), requires a high sensitivity (signal-to-noise-ratio, SNR) and high spectral resolution of satellite sensors. As current hyperspectral satellite missions enable either high temporal resolution and high SNR or high spatial resolution, future missions are envisaged which can fill the gaps in monitoring all oceanic, coastal and most inland waters. Furthermore, in these waters atmospheric correction is even more challenging due to adjacency effect to land and much more dynamic atmospheric conditions. Within this study we use the coupled ocean-atmosphere radiative transfer model (RTM) SCIATRAN to simulate the bottom and top of atmosphere backscattered reflectance covering the variation of suitable atmospheric conditions (ranging from very low to high aerosol optical thickness and low to high water vapour), in water components and observation geometry at 0.2 nm spectral resolution from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. Using this large data set of simulations, we employ varying spectral resolutions (varying from 1.25 nm to 10 nm) and SNRs (varying from 200 to 1500 nm) to identify the potential (and limits) of quantification of different phytoplankton groups and bulk parameters across the global optical water types. Final results are presented elucidating the requirements for the detection and quantification of these parameters at specific satellite sensor configurations to reflect scheduled and proposed future missions, such as CHIME, S3NGO-AOLCI, SBG and GALENE.
