AQUASCOPE: AN AQUATIC EARTH OBSERVATION (EO) DATA SERVICE FOR BELGIAN NORTH SEA USERS
High-quality satellite-based ocean colour and thermal products can provide critical information for monitoring and managing coastal ecosystems and for supporting marine policy operations. Medium-resolution ocean colour sensors (Sentinel-3/OLCI) and high-resolution land imagers (Sentinel-2/MSI, Landsat-8&9/OLI) offer complementary spatial, temporal and radiometric characteristics, thereby enabling the provision of Earth Observation (EO) products tailored to a range of coastal applications.
With AQUASCOPE (2025-2028), RBINS and VITO are bringing such aquatic satellite-derived products to the Terrascope platform, delivering a fully-fledge EO data service (satellite archive, web viewer, EOplaza…) to Belgian North Sea users. These products cover the Belgian Coastal Zone and neighbouring waters (49°N-53°N, 2°W-5°E) at 10-500m resolutions, from 2015 to near real-time (24h latency), at daily to longer timescales (monthly and yearly aggregations), including anomalies. Core parameters include Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Turbidity (TUR), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Chlorophyll-a (CHL), Algal Bloom and Eutrophication (AB/EUTRO), Floating Objects/Vegetation (FO/FV), and true-colour RGB imagery.
AQUASCOPE is optimised for Belgian end users and goes beyond standard Copernicus Marine coastal services, with a higher spatial resolution (down to 10m), a full coverage of the Belgian Coastal Zone, coherent Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 products, optimised ocean colour algorithms consistent with OSPAR practice, and dedicated fusion (/gap-filled multi-sensor) products. This service targets federal and regional authorities (environment, safety, defence, coastal services, rescue), marine scientists and modellers, research vessel users, and private sectors such as aquaculture and commercial diving, who will all be engaged to refine requirements and co-design future functionalities.
