TOWARDS COMMUNITY-AGREED UAV PROTOCOLS FOR AQUATIC REFLECTANCE
The FRM4Drones-Aqua initiative seeks to extend Fiducial Reference Measurement (FRM) principles—well established in satellite calibration and validation—to UAV-based observation, with a dedicated focus on aquatic reflectance. Its objective is to establish standardized, traceable, and community-agreed protocols for acquiring high-quality water reflectance measurements, supporting their consistent use in satellite Cal/Val and environmental monitoring applications.
Substantial progress was made through targeted user consultations, gap analyses, and broad community engagement. These efforts identified key methodological inconsistencies, and priority areas for harmonization in UAV-based aquatic observations. Building on these findings, a community-informed roadmap was developed, and activities are now moving into the implementation phase, starting with the preparation of intercomparison campaigns.
The development of consistent SI traceability and uncertainty budgets is essential to ensure comparability across instruments, sites, and campaigns, and strengthen confidence in UAV-derived reflectance products.
The work follows a community-driven approach, aiming to converge on agreed best practices through collaborative experimentation. The planned intercomparison campaign will enable the testing of protocols, quantification of variability, and refinement of methodologies under representative conditions. This transition from consensus-building to practical validation is critical for establishing a harmonized framework for UAV-based aquatic reflectance measurements.
We present the results of the consultation and gap analysis phase, introduce the developed roadmap, and describe the design and objectives of the upcoming intercomparison campaign as a key step toward implementing measurement protocols.
Building on FRM4Drones-Aqua, in the Horizon Europe OASIS project, drone data serve as a reference for satellite images by investigating small scale effects to benchmark uncertainty.
