EVALUATION OF SATELLITE-DERIVED CHLOROPHYLL-A ALONG THE CALIFORNIAN COAST
Satellite-derived chlorophyll-a products are widely used for marine ecological studies and water quality monitoring, but their accuracy in coastal waters remains a critical challenge. In this study, we evaluate the performance of three ocean-colour chlorophyll-a products: the multi-sensor merged Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI) time series, and two single-sensor products (the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Aqua (MODIS-Aqua) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), processed using NASA SeaDAS processor. These products are evaluated against in situ chlorophyll-a observations in the coastal region off California, USA, which is a highly dynamic region characterised by large phytoplankton blooms driven by coastal upwelling. Results for the 2012-2025 time series shows that the OC-CCI chlorophyll dataset exhibits the least variance, whereas VIIRS and MODIS-Aqua show large spikes in chlorophyll retrieval, particularly from 2019 onwards. Using over 12,000 in situ observations (2012–2020), we compare NASA L2GEN (MODIS and VIIRS) and OC-CCI (POLYMER) products across multiple matchup configurations, including a 2019 subset and quality-controlled cases. OC-CCI consistently shows lower bias, while RMSE depends on matchup method, with quality control improving overall agreement. For 2012-2020 the OC-CCI product achieves the highest R^2 (R^2=0.89). The results highlight the importance of satellite product selection for coastal applications and demonstrate the value of multi-sensor products for advancing ocean-colour science in coastal regions.
