ABSTRACT 1232 | POSTER 114
CHARACTERIZATION OF OPTICAL WATER TYPE FEATURES OF DIFFERENT PHYTOPLANKTON GROUPS IN THE NORTH SEA–BALTIC SEA REGION
Monitoring phytoplankton dynamics across coastal and shelf seas remains challenging due to strong optical complexity and limitations of conventional in situ sampling. Remote sensing offers synoptic coverage, yet the discrimination of phytoplankton functional types (PFTs) in optically complex (case-2) waters is still associated with significant uncertainties. This study explores the potential of an optical water type (OWT) framework to characterize spectral and spatial features of selected phytoplankton groups e.g. coccolithophores, cyanobacteria, and Noctiluca scintillans, in the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions.
The analysis combines bio-optical simulations, satellite observations with varying spatial and spectral resolutions, and available in situ datasets collected between June and September 2023. OWT classification is applied to investigate the distribution, spatial coherence, and spectral signatures of bloom events across different environmental conditions. Particular attention is given to the influence of spatial resolution, atmospheric correction uncertainties, and sub-pixel variability on the detectability of phytoplankton-specific signals.
