EVALUATING ATTENUATION CORRECTION METHODS FOR HYPERSPECTRAL BACKSCATTERING WITH THE HYPER-BB SENSOR
Backscattering is a key inherent optical property (IOP) for characterizing the underwater light field and relating in-water constituents to remote-sensing reflectance. However, backscatter sensors are susceptible to errors from light attenuation along the optical path. Absorption, scattering losses, and multiple scattering bias the measured backscattering coefficient at high particle concentrations. Here we quantify these attenuation effects on Hyper-bb measurements and evaluate two correction approaches. Concentration series of polystyrene beads and Arizona Test Dust (ATD) were measured with a Hyper-bb in a flow-through chamber, spanning a range of attenuation regimes. The data were used to assess (1) the established correction developed for the Hydroscat sensor, which shares similar optics to the Hyper-bb, and (2) a new correction derived from modeling of the Hyper-bb’s specific optical geometry (manuscript under review). We compare the two methods and provide recommendations for correcting field data collected with the Hyper-bb.
