ABSTRACT 1113 | POSTER 166
REGIONAL VARIABILITY OF PHYTOPLANKTON SIZE CLASSES IN KOREAN WATERS FROM MULTI-YEAR SATELLITE AND IN SITU OBSERVATIONS
This study examines phytoplankton size class (PSC) variability in Korean waters using combined satellite observations and in situ data collected during 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2023–2025. A total of 98 in situ observations were compiled, of which 77 were successfully matched with satellite data, including 54 points in the East Sea and 23 in the Yellow Sea. Chlorophyll-a concentrations showed clear regional differences, ranging from 0.095 to 1.377 mg m–3 (mean: 0.440 mg m–3) in the East Sea and from 0.162 to 1.881 mg m–3 (mean: 0.527 mg m–3) in the Yellow Sea, indicating higher variability and productivity in the latter. PSC composition was derived by partitioning total chlorophyll a into micro-, nano-, and picophytoplankton fractions using a three-component model. Results reveal that microphytoplankton increasingly dominate with rising chlorophyll concentrations, while nano- and picophytoplankton fractions decrease, reflecting a shift toward larger phytoplankton under more productive conditions. These patterns are consistent across regional and integrated datasets. Validation results show reasonable agreement between satellite-derived and in situ measurements, with stronger consistency in the East Sea. Overall, this study demonstrates the robustness of satellite-based PSC estimation and highlights the importance of regional variability in shaping phytoplankton community structure.
