INTEGRATION OF ASSOCIATION RULE MINING FOR SEMI-ANALYTICAL MODELING OF REMOTE SENSING REFLECTANCE IN BALTIC COASTAL WATERS
Coastal waters of the Baltic Sea are optically complex, where remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) is governed by the interdependence between various water column constituents. In this study, we integrate Association Rule Mining with a semi-analytical bio-optical framework to identify and parameterize the dominant processes controlling Rrs based on local in situ measurements. The dataset includes multispectral radiometric observations (upwelling radiance and downwelling irradiance), hydro-optical properties (Secchi depth, turbidity, sea surface), and biogeochemical parameters (chlorophyll-a concentration, suspended particulate matter, organic and inorganic fractions).
Association Rule Mining (Apriori algorithm) was applied to discretized variables to uncover statistically significant relationships between environmental conditions and optical responses. These rule-based correlations were used to constrain a semi-analytical model of Rrs, in which the backscattering coefficient was parameterized as a function of suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll-a, while absorption was represented as a chlorophyll-dependent function. The resulting model captures the nonlinear relationship between absorption and backscattering through the ratio bb/(a + bb), providing a consistent description of the observed reflectance signal. The strongest association rules revealed that high chlorophyll-a and suspended matter concentrations consistently led to elevated remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), with support values of 0.30–0.40 and confidence equal to 1.00. Additional rules indicated that low Secchi depth combined with high particle concentrations strongly enhances Rrs, confirming the dominant role of particle-driven backscattering in optically deep Baltic coastal waters.
