THE EFFECT OF NOISE IN SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE ON MARINE PRIMARY PRODUCTION
In contemporary marine primary production models, the temperature is one of the inputs used to calculate the rate of photosynthesis. On a global scale such data is typically provided by sea surface temperature (SST) maps, either obtained by remote sensing, or as an output of a hydrodynamical model. Often such SST maps hold temperature values obtained after spatial and temporal averaging. This leaves out higher frequency variability which, due to the nonlinearity in the photosynthesis temperature dependence, can lead to erroneous estimates of primary production. Here we investigate the spatial and temporal structure of sea surface temperature variability in the global ocean. We use ERA5 and CCI monthly SST data to estimate the trend (T), seasonal cycle (S) and noise (N) in the records. By using moving climatologies we estimate the changes in the T, S and N, and in their respective ratios. Regions in the ocean are then identified based on the respective ratios of T, S and N. Subsequently, a primary production model with several explicit nonlinear functional temperature dependences of the primary production is applied to estimate the effect of noise in comparison to T and S. Finally, we also use hourly data at the Hawaii Ocean Time Series and the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series to explore high frequency variability and the effect it has on estimating primary production.
