ASSESSING THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE OPTICAL CLOSURE ACROSS THE LAURENTIAN GREAT LAKES
The Laurentian Great Lakes present a wide-ranging set of optical conditions, from the oligotrophic waters of Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior to the hypereutrophic waters of western Lake Erie. To support the calibration and validation of ocean color remote sensing models, inherent and apparent optical properties (IOPs and AOPs, respectively) have been sampled by various groups throughout the lakes for over 20 years, including in harmful algal blooms and sediment plumes. These datasets have been used to conduct a few limited closure experiments to determine how well the above-water reflectance can be modeled using the measured IOPs, a critical step for the development and validation of ocean color inversion algorithms. The commercialization of the Sequoia Scientific Hyper-bb sensor has allowed for the collection of hyperspectral backscattering data since 2022, resulting in hundreds of fully hyperspectral IOP and AOP datasets. This analysis builds on the prior closure efforts, using the HydroLight radiative transfer software to more comprehensively assess our ability to achieve optical closure in the Great Lakes across a wide range of optical conditions and with hyperspectral resolution. Included in the analyses is an assessment of the impact of parameterizing Fournier-Forand phase functions with spectrally flat, multispectral (8 bands) and hyperspectral (55 bands) backscattering ratios as well as a suite of optical data correction approaches. The results of this work support our ability to develop robust inversion algorithms for complex freshwater systems from hyperspectral satellites (e.g., PACE) as well as the generation of high quality hyperspectral validation datasets for the community.
