ACTIVE FLUORESCENCE IMAGING AND FLUOROMETRIC BATHYMETRIC LIDAR: ADVANCING COASTAL MAPPING TECHNOLOGIES

The Autonomous Coastal Color Environmental Surveying System (ACCESS) is an advanced autonomous platform that integrates several optical and acoustic sensor packages to enhance coastal mapping capabilities. Recent field deployments at Assateague Island National Seashore demonstrated the use of the Active Fluorescence Imaging (AFI) technique for benthic target detection, utilizing 464 nm light emission from dive lamps and a hyperspectral imager to retrieve fluorescence emission spectra of submerged targets. These results highlight the potential of fluorescence-based approaches for detecting and characterizing benthic features in cluttered environments. Building on this work, the concept of extending AFI to fluorometric bathymetric lidar was explored, aiming to improve imaging range and resolution. While lidar integration was not realized during the initial deployments, indoor tank tests have provided preliminary insights into its capabilities for submerged target detection, and separate surveys with only the lidar are shown. This work will discuss the results of AFI field tests, the potential of fluorometric lidar for coastal applications, and the modularity of the ACCESS platform for sensor integration and future advancements.
