ABSTRACT 1405 | POSTER 87

CONSIDERATION OF CORRELATIONS IN RADIOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Global observing systems rely on optical reflectance measurements to track key biogeophysical quantities, such as primary productivity. However, the precision of these data products is often limited by environmental measurement uncertainties that propagate through retrieval algorithms, making it difficult to quantify small changes against a background of high spatial and temporal variability. Prior work demonstrated up to a five-fold reduction in the Type A water-leaving radiance uncertainty by considering correlations in measurements of a region of interest and a reference target using a single spectrograph with multiple fiber inputs. Similar results were obtained when considering time correlations in reflectance measurements over land, again using a single spectrograph with multiple fiber inputs.

This study extends the previous work by evaluating correlations of reflectance measurements using two independent instruments synchronized by a common trigger or reference timing signal. This approach fully decouples the acquisition systems, increasing operational flexibility and expanding potential applications. Consideration of correlations could lead to a reduction in uncertainties in biogeophysical data products derived from environmental measurements and reduce the number of measurements needed for vicarious calibration efforts.
