ABSTRACT 1227 | POSTER 91

MAPPING PHYTOPLANKTON AND CARBON PATHWAYS FROM SPACE THROUGH OPTICAL WATER TYPE CLASSIFICATION

Optical Water Type (OWT) classification offers a powerful framework to resolve aquatic optical complexity beyond traditional Case-1/Case-2 schemes. It enables consistent and seamless mapping of some phytoplankton groups and carbon pools across the freshwater–marine continuum. Using Sentinel-3 OLCI observations processed with the novel A4O atmospheric correction, 99.7% of spectra are robustly classified into OWTs spanning the full variability of inland, coastal, and marine waters. Leveraging OWT-specific biogeo-optical relationships, we link spectral signatures to phytoplankton assemblages to enhance estimates of phytoplankton-associated carbon and improve retrievals of organic and inorganic carbon. This approach strengthens quantification of land–sea fluxes and captures spatial–temporal variability in dynamic regions such as the North Sea–Baltic Sea and the Mackenzie River–Beaufort Sea systems. Together, these advances establish a unified, observation-driven framework for quantifying aquatic carbon dynamics across scales.
