MONITORING SUSPENDED SEDIMENT IN THE DANUBE RIVER USING HIGH SPATIAL RESOLUTION SATELLITE IMAGERY

The Danube River provides many important ecosystem services for European countries, and is the largest and most significant river flowing to the Black Sea. Sediments, in particular, play an important role in shaping the constantly evolving geomorphology and influencing the aquatic ecosystem health of the river channel, the Danube Delta and coastal environments of the Black Sea. In this research, our aim was to quantify the total suspended matter (TSM) and particle size in Danube River from high spatial resolution Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) imagery. We undertook five in situ campaigns along the river encompassing upstream and downstream environments during 2023 and 2025, collecting remote sensing reflectance, TSM concentration and particle size data to support the development and validation of their retrieval from satellite-based Earth observation. We firstly evaluated six atmospheric correction algorithms including the C2RCC, C2X, C2X-Complex, Acolite-DSF, Acolite-RadCor and Polymer using Sentinel-2 MSI images acquired within half hour of in situ sampling. Results showed that C2X and Acolite-RadCor performed better than the remaining atmospheric correction methods. A semi-analytical algorithm was then applied to retrieve TSM in Danube River stretching from Munich in Germany to Danube Delta in Romania. The TSM data were accompanied by the retrieval of estimated in river particle size distributions using a model calibrated from the in situ reflectance, TSM and particle size data.
