INTERNAL ISLAND-TRAPPED WAVES IN THE COASTAL ADRIATIC SEA REVEALED FROM SPACE: RESOLVING THE BIOPHYSICAL COUPLING

The Lastovo Island in the Adriatic Sea is one of a few coastal regions worldwide where internal island-trapped waves (ITWs) recurrently develop during summertime stratification and can vertically displace the thermocline by up to 30 m. Field campaigns during summers 2021-2023 yielded a high-resolution in situ dataset including temperature, currents, PAR, nutrients, chlorophyll a, plankton community, and 14C primary production. Although the physical mechanisms underlying ITWs and their biological impacts are well documented by data collected in situ, their footprint seen from space remains unknown. In this study, we evaluate a suite of physical and biological remote-sensing products to identify the ITW signal and its effects on biomass and net primary production (NPP). Heterogeneous spatial distribution of NPP was revealed, with higher values observed in the southern area where the ITW-related thermocline shallowing coincided with the solar irradiance maximum. This corresponds well with in situ NPP that increased by up to 97.90% within the thermocline, along with an increase of the underwater irradiance by ca. 60–70 W m–2. Annual satellite-derived NPP was the highest in 2021 (122.9 ± 8.38 g C m–2), followed by 2023 (118.0 ± 8.03 g C m–2) and 2022 (114.8 ± 8.24 g C m–2), with the strongest ITW-driven contribution occurring in 2022 (3.80%), followed by 2021 (1.63%) and 2023 (1.52%). Overall, ITWs can temporarily transform a stratified water column into an environment more favorable for primary producers and, although episodic and localized, provide a measurable enrichment in regional productivity.
