SENTINEL-2 BASED OPTICAL WATER TYPE CLASSIFICATION ACROSS DIVERSE MEDITERRANEAN LAGOONS

Mediterranean lagoons can be defined as highly dynamic coastal ecosystems potentially vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures and climate change. Traditional field surveys, while essential, are often limited in spatial and temporal coverage and require substantial costs and expert knowledge.

To overcome these limitations, this study focuses on the classification of Optical Water Types (OWTs) using Sentinel-2 Level-2A (bottom-of-atmosphere) derived spectral reflectance data, with the aim of improving large-scale monitoring of lagoon environments. The analysis was conducted across nine Mediterranean lagoons located in different countries, including Spain, France, Italy, and Albania, thus covering a wide range of environmental and optical conditions. By exploiting multispectral satellite observations, we investigated the variability of optical properties and identified consistent spectral signatures associated with different lagoon states.

A classification framework was proposed, following the approach developed by Atwood et al. (2024), to group similar optical behaviors, enabling a robust and transferable approach for water type mapping across heterogeneous lagoons. Preliminary results indicate the presence of three main lagoon optical types, ranging from strongly eutrophic conditions, through intermediate trophic states, to relatively healthy, low-nutrient (oligotrophic-like) conditions. These results highlight the effectiveness of OWT classification as a proxy for lagoon ecological characterization and demonstrate its potential for providing spatially consistent information at a regional scale.

While this study focuses primarily on optical classification, future work may explore the integration of OWT frameworks with predictive modeling of physico-chemical parameters, in order to further enhance lagoon monitoring and support decision-making for conservation and management.
