TOWARD CROSS-SENSOR VALIDATION OF HYPSO OCEAN COLOR PRODUCTS USING SENTINEL-3 OLCI MATCHUPS
The increasing availability of optical hyperspectral satellite observations has opened new possibilities for monitoring coastal environments. Among hyperspectral missions, the HYPSO (HYPerspectral Small Satellite for Ocean Observation) CubeSats, developed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), provide targeted hyperspectral observations of coastal and inland waters. By measuring reflected light in hundreds of narrow spectral bands, HYPSO enables characterization of water constituents beyond the capabilities of multispectral sensors.
To assess the consistency of HYPSO-derived products with established ocean-color missions, comparisons with well-characterized satellite sensors are required. However, differences in spectral and spatial characteristics complicate direct comparisons and require cross-sensor analyses for validation of reflectance and chlorophyll products.
This work demonstrates a methodology for collecting spatially and temporally collocated matchups between the HYPSO and Sentinel-3 OLCI, including efficient processing steps tailored to hyperspectral datasets. Sentinel-3 provides multispectral observations and operational chlorophyll products, while HYPSO offers higher spectral resolution. Developing a robust matchup database is a critical first step toward cross-sensor analysis, validation, and algorithm development.
Examples from several coastal scenes in Norway acquired in early 2025 are presented. POLYMER atmospheric correction is applied to HYPSO observations to generate preliminary chlorophyll-a retrievals. Reprojected HYPSO reflectance and chlorophyll maps are shown alongside collocated Sentinel-3 OLCI products for qualitative comparison. This work does not present validated chlorophyll products but rather demonstrates a methodology for producing consistent matchups between HYPSO and Sentinel-3 OLCI observations, establishing a foundation for future ocean-color studies using HYPSO observations.
