VALIDATION OF NASA PACE OCI PRODUCTS FOR THE LAURENTIAN GREAT LAKES
The Great Lakes serve as an ideal location to validate PACE OCI products due to the large range of particle compositions and concentrations which yield a variable set of optical properties. Additionally, due to their size, the Great Lakes are also conducive for application of OCI products at 1 km spatial resolution, which is not the case for most freshwater systems. The potential of the PACE mission to provide advanced data products that go beyond traditional ocean color is of high interest to the Great Lakes community. To realize these new capabilities, exhaustive validation is critical to achieving required product accuracy and document uncertainties.
The Michigan Tech Research Institute has undertaken an exhaustive validation campaign in partnership with NASA, USEPA, and NOAA which leverages available ship-time aboard multiple agency research vessels throughout the Great Lakes during the ice-free period. Campaigns have occurred in 2024, 2025, and 2026 with plans to continue in 2027. The campaign centers around the deployment of an inline flowthrough system with IOP instrumentation (AC-s and Hyper-bb) and a robotic solar tracking radiometer system (pySAS). Along with the continuous systems are lab measurements of particulate and dissolved absorption, TSM, DOC, phytoplankton primary production (LabSTAF) pigments (HPLC). Additionally, these observations are coincident with federal agency measurements including phytoplankton counts and HAB toxin concentrations. The campaign has documented a high degree of optical variability across seasons representing mixed to stratified water columns and significant shifts in phytoplankton communities. Preliminary comparisons between in situ data and PACE observations is underway.
