EXPLORING MEASUREMENTS OF POLARIZED WATER-LEAVING RADIANCE WITH A CIMEL POLARIZED SUN PHOTOMETER
Satellite-based ocean color instruments have provided invaluable measurements of the water-leaving radiance for decades. The polarization of the water-leaving radiance, however, has been less studied and utilized, even though it is uniquely sensitive to particle microphysical parameters, such as refractive index and particle size distribution. The Aerosol Robotic Network for Ocean Color (AERONET-OC) provides critical measurements of the unpolarized water-leaving radiance from instruments just above sea level, which validate the atmospheric correction needed to infer water-leaving radiance from satellite-based measurements. Polarimeters in space, such as those on the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite, could measure the polarized water-leaving radiance but would require polarized atmospheric correction and polarized validation measurements. While such validation measurements have been recorded in field campaigns, this presentation discusses a potential method for achieving them long term. We deployed a hyperspectral polarimeter alongside the polarized version of the Cimel instruments used in AERONET for atmospheric measurements (CE318-TP9) on a pier in the Chesapeake Bay. To explore the potential of polarized water-leaving radiance measurements with a Cimel instrument, we recorded measurements of the water and sky with the hyperspectral polarimeter at a variety of geometries. We processed the hyperspectral polarimeter data to approximate the measurements recorded by the polarized atmospheric Cimel instrument. We also limited the hyperspectral data to the spectral bands in the AERONET-OC instruments. We present a preliminary comparison of these datasets and discuss the potential for polarized water-leaving radiance measurements from a Cimel instrument.
