A MERGED OCEAN COLOR REFLECTANCE AND CHLOROPHYLL-A RECORD FOR THE U.S. COAST

Global monitoring of chlorophyll-a (Chla) via satellite is key to understanding carbon and energy budgets, marine food webs, and water quality extremes. For fisheries and water quality applications, accurate, long-term Chla retrievals in variable productive and coastal waters are desirable. Development of continuous multi-mission timeseries of Chla to support such applications remains a long-standing challenge in ocean color remote sensing. Retrieving Chla from ocean color in complex water is complicated due to variable concentrations of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and other non-algal particles. Empirical band ratio algorithms, for example, can become biased given the overlapping spectral signatures of Chla and CDOM. This problem has previously been addressed for coastal regions by tailoring Chla algorithms to correct biases empirically. Even with such adjustments, differences in instrument-specific wavelengths and biases among ocean color sensors further limit generation of consistent time-series. Aligning radiometric inputs allows use of a single algorithm and may stabilize empirical bias corrections for coastal Chla retrieval. This study aims to develop a merged dataset of spectral remote-sensing reflectances (Rrs) and Chla for the northeast U.S. using eight instruments spanning 2002-present day. A spectral band shifting approach is adopted to create a SeaWiFS-like Rrs and Chla dataset. PACE imagery is used to evaluate the approach using internally consistent Rrs. A final Rrs and Chla dataset is validated using MODIS-Aqua and Envisat MERIS imagery in April and October from 2002-2012 for comparison with SeaWiFS. Results demonstrate that band shifting produces consistent cross-mission Rrs and Chla retrievals over the study period.
