THE HYPERSPECTRAL BIO-OPTICAL OBSERVATIONS SAILING ON TARA (HYPERBOOST) DATASET: VARIABILITY OF THE OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND BIO-OPTICAL RELATIONSHIPS IN EUROPEAN COASTAL WATERS

The development, refinement, and validation of ocean-colour products rely on high-quality in situ bio-optical datasets, both as independent references and in combination with satellite observations. This is especially critical in coastal waters, where the optical complexity due to high loads of optically active components, land adjacency effects, and complex atmospheric aerosol mixtures, affect the satellite signal.

The Tara Europa expedition, the ocean component of the Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) program, carried a comprehensive sampling of the European coastal ecosystems in 2023 and 2024. The Tara Europa expedition offered the unique opportunity of an oceanographic survey from a unique platform, using the same set of protocols, instruments, and sample analysis, collocated with a dataset describing the microbiological and genomic diversity in detail.

Within the Hyperspectral Bio-Optical Observations Sailing on Tara (HyperBOOST) project, the variables collected during TREC were extended by including bio-optical measurements. Continuous inline optical measurements were combined with laboratory analyses of surface water samples collected at 202 stations along the European coasts. This provided a comprehensive dataset encompassing biogeochemical data, hyperspectral inherent optical properties and radiometry for optically complex waters.

This presentation will summarize the HyperBOOST bio-optical dataset to highlight the variability of the optical properties and bio-optical relationships across water types, salinity gradients, and among European basins. These results are analyzed and discussed in the scope of improving the retrieval of biogeochemical products in European waters from ocean color satellite data. The validation for operational and scientific ocean colour missions, products, and datasets will also be showcased.
