REPROCESSING OF ONEARGO CHLOROPHYLL-A DATASET: HIGH-IMPACT FOR END-USERS

The OneArgo program is revolutionizing ocean biogeochemical monitoring through its global fleet of BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) profiling floats. While these floats measure chlorophyll-a fluorescence (fluo), the program delivers chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla), a key indicator of phytoplankton biomass. However, converting fluo to Chla is highly challenging, as the physiological ratio (fluo/Chla) varies with phytoplankton community composition, nutrient status, light levels, and environmental conditions. To address this, we have developed a new varying physiological ratio map at 1°×1° resolution, replacing the previous global mean ratio of 2 (Roesler et al., 2017) currently applied in the Chla Argo data stream. This map will be used to reprocess the global Chla Argo dataset (starting in June 2026), significantly improving its accuracy and reconciling it with satellite Chla observations. This correction will have a high impact for end users, changing the data in some areas by a factor of ~4 (e.g., the Southern Ocean). The reprocessed dataset will enhance the reliability of BGC-Argo data, ensuring Argo users have access to more accurate and consistent Chla estimates for scientific research and operational applications, including data assimilation into biogeochemical models.
