QUANTIFICATION OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON IN THE GREENLAND SEA AND WEST SPITSBERGEN SHELF WITH USE OF OPTICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROXIES

Combination of optical parameters including particulate backscattering coefficient, attenuation coefficient, and particulate absorption coefficient together with biogeochemical variables such as total chlorophyll a concentration (TChla) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) have been used to estimate particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in marine waters. Here, we examine relationships between POC and TChla concentration and spectral particulate absorption and backscattering coefficients measured during three cruises in the Greenland Sea in spring and summer 2025. Observations were collected in the western Greenland Sea in May (Atlantic Arctic Oceans Change cruise – AOC2025), in west Spitsbergen shelf (AREX-2025 cruise) and across the Fram Strait (FS2025 cruise) in August. TChla alone was a good predictor of POC in pelagic ocean waters, where significant correlation between TChla and POC was observed (R²>0.8). However, approximation of the POC values from particulate absorption coefficient at 443 nm, ap(443) using power function regression yielded better results (R²>0.9). Multivariate regression with TChla and particle backscattering coefficient at 650 nm, bbp(650) as independent variables was also tested with R² > 0.75. Results of POC approximation with all considered optical parameters significantly deteriorated when data from West Spitsbergen shelf coastal stations were included in the analysis. Using optical parameters in red spectral band (ap(670) and bbp(650)) for approximation of POC did not improve the coefficient of determination in the pelagic domain, but enabled to achieve satisfactory results of regression analysis, when combined coastal and pelagic datasets were analyzed.
