RADIOMETRIC INTERCOMPARISON AND CROSS-CALIBRATION OF GOCI-II WITH VIIRS IN THE NIR BANDS

The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) provides high-temporal-resolution observations of ocean color over East Asia from a geostationary orbit and plays a critical role in marine environmental monitoring. However, uncertainties in atmospheric transmittance and aerosol scattering estimation in the near-infrared (NIR) bands (745 and 865 nm) can directly introduce uncertainties in the retrieved remote sensing reflectance (Rrs). To address this issue, this study evaluates the radiometric consistency between GOCI-II and the polar-orbiting Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), and investigates the potential for improving NIR band calibration.

The analysis focuses on low-latitude ocean regions within the GOCI-II full-disk coverage. Ray-matched matchup datasets were constructed within a temporal window of 20 minutes to ensure consistent viewing geometry between the two sensors. To ensure robust intercomparison, filtering criteria were applied considering oceanic conditions, viewing geometry, sun-glint effects, and spatial homogeneity. Based on the selected matchup data, radiometric comparisons and regression analyses were performed between the two sensors. In addition, a hyperspectral-based approach was considered to mitigate the impact of differences in spectral response functions.

The results indicate that radiometric differences between GOCI-II and VIIRS in the NIR bands are associated with uncertainties in atmospheric correction. These differences propagate into variations in the retrieved Rrs, highlighting the importance of accurate NIR calibration. This study demonstrates the feasibility of improving GOCI-II radiometric performance through ray-matched intercomparison with VIIRS and provides a foundation for future development of quantitative calibration coefficients and improved atmospheric correction algorithms.
