TOWARDS OCEAN PHYTOPLANKTON STOICHIOMETRY FROM PACE
Phytoplankton elemental stoichiometry (C:N:P) plays a central role in ocean biogeochemistry by linking nutrient availability to primary production and determining how much carbon is fixed and potentially exported per unit of nutrient. While long assumed to be relatively constant, growing evidence shows that phytoplankton stoichiometry varies substantially across regions, seasons, and taxa, with important implications for estimates of biological production and carbon export. However, the spatio-temporal variability of phytoplankton stoichiometry remains poorly constrained by observations, limiting our ability to quantify its role in global biogeochemical cycles and carbon export. A recent approach have demonstrated the potential of combining satellite ocean-color observations with mechanistic models to estimate large-scale patterns of phytoplankton stoichiometry (Tanioka et al., 2020). This demonstration utilized multispectral observations without resolving variability across phytoplankton functional types. The hyperspectral capabilities of the PACE mission provide new opportunities to better constrain phytoplankton functional types and their associated biogeochemical properties. Here, we present the conceptual basis of the PACE Ocean Phytoplankton Stoichiometry (POPS) framework, which aims to retrieve phytoplankton functional type (PFT)-specific C:N:P stoichiometry and primary production rates from hyperspectral ocean color observations. This work is currently at an early stage. We will present the POPS framework and discuss how hyperspectral observations may improve the characterization of phytoplankton stoichiometry and its variability compared with existing multispectral approaches.
