OPTICALLY-ENHANCED CHLOROPHYLL A PROFILE GAP-FILLING
Estimation of marine primary production requires information on phytoplankton biomass at large spatial scale and over prolonged periods of time. One of the indices of phytoplankton biomass is chlorophyll concentration, typically measured either in situ, providing localized vertical profiles of chlorophyll, or via remote sensing, providing large-scale global surface coverage typically based on optical properties up to the first optical depth. Main advantage of in situ measurements is that they provide data against which remote sensing algorithms can be validated. The importance of in situ measurements is reflected in the existence of multi-decade long records, such as the Hawaii Ocean Time-series, Bermuda Atlantic Time Series and the Cariaco Ocean Time-Seres. While they provide near-monthly measurements, gaps diminish the usefulness of these records in climate analysis. This work utilizes satellite measured optical data obtained via remote sensing to augment different machine-learning gap-filling approaches to the aforementioned time-series. Firstly, a depth-wise correlation between satellite and in situ chlorophyll is examined across the three stations. Next, two machine-learning methods, namely linear regression and Random Forest regression are trained using univariate and multivariate approaches. Finally, the reconstruction accuracy is evaluated a posteriori via artificial masking.
