EVALUATION OF METHODS FOR ESTIMATING SARGASSUM ABUNDANCE: SYNERGIC USE OF MSI/SENTINEL-2 AND OLCI/SENTINEL-3 REMOTE SENSING DATA COMBINED WITH FIELD MEASUREMENTS
Massive strandings of holopelagic Sargassum seaweed have impacted the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico since 2011, causing serious health, economic, and ecological problems due to the release of toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide during decay. The remote sensing technique is commonly used to detect and characterize Sargassum aggregations. Several products have been developed to estimate Sargassum fractional coverages based on algal index (e.g., AFAI, MCI), inversion of semi analytical radiative transfer, or deep learning methods. These fractional coverage estimates are first used to estimate Sargassum covered surfaces and then Sargassum biomass. Here, a comparative analysis of these methods will be presented and validated against in situ measurements acquired during a field campaign in Martinique Island (France) from 23 June to 2 July 2024. The campaign included aerial observations and direct measurements at sea of spectral reflectance and Sargassum biomass. This work, which is based on relevant and novel in-situ bio-optical data in Sargassum dominated waters, highlights the challenges in estimating biomass via remote sensing, identifies the key in-situ parameters required in the process, and discusses the associated methodological uncertainties.
