FORECAST SIMULATIONS OF SATELLITE‑OBSERVED SEA SURFACE RADIANCE

To evaluate whether upcoming satellite acquisitions are likely to produce a viable wave signal, we present a simulation pipeline that generates a satellite-observed reflected radiance from a reconstructed sea surface. This coding tool supports satellite tasking by providing visibility ratings for possible satellite passes over a given area of interest using forecasted acquisition geometry, wave characteristics, and lighting conditions.

Forecasted bulk wave parameters, retrieved from Copernicus marine’s global wave model, are used to construct directional wave energy spectra which is propagated in deep water conditions using a random-phase Fourier synthesis and the linear dispersion relation to generate a sea surface. The time-evolving imagery is constructed by applying a directionally distributed incident sky radiance for the site at the potential acquisition time and calculating the radiance reflected towards a dynamic observer position from the free surface slopes. An inverse Fourier transform is applied to this imagery, defining the visible directional wave energy spectrum; then, signal coherence and correlation between the input and output directional spectrum are used to evaluate the losses.

This design allows for the systematic testing of parameter sensitivity, and the exploration of the feasibility of future acquisition strategies for optical missions. By coupling forecasted wave conditions with simulated radiance fields, mission operators can anticipate whether upcoming orbital segments will yield sufficiently clear optical wave signals for reliable optical wave measurements.
