INTEGRATED SATELLITE RETRIEVAL OF MARINE PHYTOPLANKTON INVENTORY AND TRAITS USING A MULTIVARIABLE SEMI-ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK
Satellite-derived information on marine phytoplankton community composition, biomass and biodiversity indicators are central to understanding ocean carbon cycling, marine resource management and assessing ecosystem health. Satellite retrieval algorithms that have been proposed independently for retrieving phytoplankton functional types, size classes, and related properties vary in methodology, from empirical, semi-analytical to machine learning. The diversity of algorithms targeting non-standard products has simultaneously advanced the field and created challenges for the users due to inconsistent methodological assumptions and availability for certain products such as phytoplankton size classes and functional types, while extremely limited options for quantities such as direct cell counts or phytoplankton nutritional value. To address these challenges, a Multivariable Semi-Analytical Inversion Framework will be presented, which can provide a one-stop framework streamlined from a series of our previously developed semi-analytical algorithms. The component algorithms in this framework are inherently interlinked, and the framework yields multiple complementary outputs from ocean colour, including phytoplankton cell abundance, cell size, size structure and size classes, phytoplankton carbon, cellular macromolecular compositions and nutritional value. The applicability of this framework in generating over a dozen phytoplankton-related ocean-colour products will be demonstrated on a global scale. The approach and results will be discussed in the context of advancing beyond fragmented algorithm development and adopting a more comprehensive way to simultaneously obtain multiple satellite products, highlighting the potential to scale this approach towards wider ecosystem applications at regional to global scales.
