TOWARDS HYPERSPECTRAL RANGE-GATING: WIDE-FIELD LED BASED RGB TIME-OF-FLIGHT IMAGING SYSTEM

Range enhancing imaging techniques like range-gating (flash LiDAR) can improve the working range of optical underwater systems, in particular in coastal waters. Typically, these devices use laser illumination, predominantly because of their superior pulse energy and shape. However, we managed to develop red, green and blue LED spotlights capable of high power, nanosecond pulses in combination with a 512×512 pixel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) camera, enabling range-gating. The sensor system, spotlight design and its characterization will be presented. The system performance in turbid natural waters is evaluated in terms of contrast and contrast to noise ratio over a line pattern on a diffuse reflective target. Results show, that the system is capable of imaging over at least 4.7 attenuation lengths in turbid waters. In combination with an efficient high power, non-gated mode that boosts the emitted optical power to multiple Watt (flood illumination), the system is designed to adapt to different environmental conditions by operational mode selection (passive, flood illumination, range-gating). In addition, the wide spectral bandwidth of LEDs compared to lasers offers an interesting opportunity for white-light range gating as a step towards hyperspectral range-gating. A first reconstruction of range-gated color images will be shown as well as an outlook towards a concept for color reconstruction utilizing backscatter signals from within the water column.
