A NOVEL ALGORITHM FOR PARTICLE OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND SPM RETRIEVAL IN TURBID COASTAL WATERS
Retrieving inherent optical properties (IOPs) and water quality parameters from remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) in optically complex coastal and estuarine waters remains a significant challenge. Overlapping spectral features, high environmental variability, and bottom visibility complicate retrievals across a broad range of aquatic environments; in highly turbid waters, sensor saturation poses an additional challenge, where accurate monitoring of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and IOPs underpins coastal management. Here, we present a novel matrix-based semi-analytical inversion algorithm designed for the simultaneous retrieval of particle absorption, particle backscattering, mean particle size, and SPM concentration. Operating within the red-to-near-infrared (NIR) spectral range (650–850 nm) and building upon established linear matrix inversion frameworks, it derives backscattering at reference wavelengths using all available red and NIR wavelengths, and further exploits the power-law slope of particle backscattering to estimate mean particle size. This relationship is supported by measurements carried out with Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST) instruments. Validation was conducted using in situ and satellite datasets, including hyperspectral (PRISMA) and multispectral (Sentinel-2 and -3) sensors over diverse turbid waters including the Venice Lagoon, the Gironde Estuary, and the Patos Lagoon. The algorithm demonstrated accuracy comparable to or exceeding established algorithms, especially in highly turbid environments. These results position it as a valuable tool for advancing the retrieval of particulate properties and SPM concentration in challenging coastal and estuarine environments.
