SWAMPY (SHALLOW WATER SEMI-ANALYTICAL MODEL IN PYTHON)
Bathymetric and bottom cover maps in optically shallow waters are critical for coastal management and habitat monitoring, particularly in sensitive ecosystems such as seagrass meadows and coral reefs. However, retrieving this information from ocean colour observations remains challenging. Several approaches have been proposed to estimate bottom properties, including physics-based inversion algorithms combined with optimization techniques that minimize the mismatch between observed and simulated spectra, as well as more recently, data-driven approaches based on machine learning. While physics-based inversion algorithms are not dependent on a specific training dataset and can therefore be applied more robustly to new regions, their application is often constrained by high computational demand, implementation complexity, and sensitivity to initial parameter guesses. SWAMpy is a Python implementation of a semi-analytical inversion model designed to retrieve water column depth, inherent optical properties, and bottom substrate composition from satellite reflectance that was initially made available in the ESA’s SNAP toolbox an output of the Sen2Coral project. The model builds on the foundational radiative transfer formulations for shallow waters proposed by Lee et al. (1998, 1999) and incorporates key elements from SAMBUCA (Brando et al., 2009) and BOMBER (Giardino et al., 2012), including a relaxed-constraints formulation for bottom reflectance. (Petit et al. 2017). Here, we present an updated version of SWAMpy introducing methodological innovations such as strategies to reduce model unknowns, for example, constraining water column properties using nearby deep-water estimates or using a bathymetric map as input, as well as improved initialization schemes to limit convergence to local minima.
