OC-RT: A VECTOR RADIATIVE TRANSFER SIMULATOR FOR GOCI-III ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION AND OCEAN COLOR APPLICATIONS
Atmospheric correction is a key requirement for deriving reliable ocean-color products from the future Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-III (GOCI-III). In particular, GOCI-III is planned to introduce single-view polarization observations, which increase the need for a flexible and accurate vector radiative transfer framework for atmospheric correction development and application studies. To support this effort, we developed a vector radiative transfer simulator designed for GOCI-III as well as for broader ocean-color remote sensing applications (OC-RT).
OC-RT is intended not only for mission-specific algorithm development, but also as a practical and user-oriented tool for atmospheric correction researchers who need to generate look-up tables (LUTs) and machine-learning training datasets efficiently and consistently. The simulator was evaluated through intercomparison with other radiative transfer codes in both plane-parallel atmosphere (PPA) and pseudo-spherical atmosphere (SSA) modes. These comparisons were conducted to assess the numerical reliability of the model under atmospheric and viewing geometries relevant to ocean-color remote sensing.
The current version supports a black-ocean lower boundary, which is appropriate for atmospheric-path radiance simulations and atmospheric correction algorithm development. Future extensions will include coupling with an underwater radiative transfer model to enable fully coupled ocean-atmosphere simulations. OC-RT is implemented in both Python and C++ and will be fully released for academic purposes. Continuous improvements and updates are planned based on user feedback, with the goal of providing a convenient and extensible radiative transfer platform for the ocean-color community.
