HYPERSPECTRAL RADIOMETRY IN THE OPEN OCEAN: BGC-ARGO FLOATS SUPPORTING SATELLITE VALIDATION
The BioGeoChemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) program is progressively building a global network of autonomous profiling floats equipped with biogeochemical and bio-optical sensors. Since 2012, floats have measured downwelling irradiance (Ed) at three wavelengths (380, 412, and 490 nm). Since 2022, within the ERC-REFINE project, a subset of ~21 floats has been equipped with ruggedized hyperspectral TriOS-RAMSES radiometers, enabling measurements of both Ed and upwelling radiance (Lu) from 300 m to the surface. These floats operate across diverse open-ocean regions and currently provide near-real-time profiles every 10 days, with nearly 1200 hyperspectral profiles acquired to date.
This study evaluates the potential of BGC-Argo floats to meet the requirements of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRM) for ocean color satellite validation. In particular, we present a processing framework to derive hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) from raw measurements. Each Rrs spectrum is quality-controlled using a method specifically developed for hyperspectral BGC-Argo profiles, and is associated with an uncertainty estimated through Monte Carlo propagation based on a comprehensive uncertainty budget. This budget relies on the characterization of adapted TriOS-RAMSES radiometers, as well as on the quantification of the main platform-specific sources of uncertainty.
Finally, we present results from comparisons between quality-controlled in situ Rrs spectra and ocean color satellite observations. These results demonstrate that the development of a BGC-Argo fleet dedicated to operational validation is technically feasible. Such an approach represents a natural evolution of the ocean color validation framework, providing a system consistent with the spatial coverage and spectral resolution of current and future satellite missions.
