FELLOWSHIP OF AGULHAS RINGS AND THEIR SHIFTING PLANKTON REALMS USING PACE

The Agulhas leakage, a critical choke point in global ocean circulation, sheds large mesoscale eddies (Agulhas rings) that transport Indian Ocean waters into the South Atlantic. We follow the evolution of these rings and their impact on the South Atlantic ecosystem by integrating satellite altimetry (SSH), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and PACE ocean color data. As eddies moved westward, we used SST and SSH to define the physical boundaries and lifecycle of the rings. Concurrently, PACE-based observations of the picophytoplankton community and other optical proxies were used to estimate shifts in phytoplankton diversity and ecosystem state, inside and outside of the rings.
