SATELLITE RETRIEVAL OF CDOM IN GDAŃSK BAY AND ITS POTENTIAL CONNECTION TO ORGANIC ALKALINITY
Gdańsk Bay is an optically complex coastal area of the Baltic Sea, where high absorption by coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and relatively low scattering limit the applicability of standard ocean-colour algorithms. In the Baltic Sea, CDOM is a major contributor to light absorption in the shortwave visible range and strongly influences the blue part of the spectrum. These optical conditions make the region well suited for the development of regionally adapted satellite products. Here we present the initial stage of work toward a regional CDOM retrieval algorithm for Gdańsk Bay based on Sentinel-2 MSI and Sentinel-3 OLCI observations, using historical in situ data collected by the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN) for validation. The two satellite sensors offer complementary advantages: Sentinel-2 provides higher spatial resolution needed in coastal waters, while Sentinel-3 offers broader spectral coverage and more consistent temporal sampling. The analysis explores relationships between satellite-derived reflectance, CDOM absorption, and related biogeochemical variables using multiple regression and advanced statistical approaches. An additional goal is to assess whether satellite-derived CDOM can be used as an indicator of organic alkalinity variability in Gdańsk Bay. Establishing such a link would support improved monitoring of carbon-related biogeochemical processes in Baltic coastal waters.
