SENTINEL-3 OLCI COLLECTION 4 WATER PROCESSING
In the first half of 2026, EUMETSAT introduced a new version of water processing for the EC Copernicus Programme OLCI sensors on Sentinel-3 satellite constellation (https://user.eumetsat.int/news-events/news/new-sentinel-3-olci-level-2-water-processing). The new processing, called Collection 4, includes several processing changes:
- switch from the previous water reflectance to remote sensing reflectance parameters, Rrs, for OLCI 16 spectral bands,
- BRDF O25 correction of Rrs,
- chlorophyll concentration with algorithms depending on optical water classes,
- new fluorescence peak height parameter,
- updated atmospheric correction and processing in dust conditions,
- new System Vicarious Calibration gains,
- correction for discontinuities between cameras 3, 4, and 5,
- extended sunglint retrievals and updated screening of sea ice,
- removed, renamed and new flagging.
The poster will present further details on the processing updates, as well as validation results. The validations will include matchups with in situ measurements, data time-series analyses, and examples of OLCI processing over diagnostic sites. The changes from Collection-3 processing will be highlighted.
EUMETSAT’s product access, reprocessed time series, and user resources will be described.
