ABSTRACT 1262 | POSTER 78

TEMPORAL VARIATION OF WATER REFLECTANCE AND WATER QUALITY IN THE BLANKAART WATER RESERVOIR USING IN SITU AND SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING

The Blankaart Water Production Center (WPC) reservoir is one of the main raw water sources for the production of drinking water for the coastal region of Belgium. It stores approximately 3 million m3 of raw surface water and serves as an initial biological treatment stage, before the water undergoes further processing into drinking water. Monitoring water quality in the reservoir is crucial for ensuring the availability and sustainable management of freshwater resources.

In this study, we evaluate water quality parameters such as the concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and suspended particulate matter (SPM), as derived from in situ and satellite measurements of water reflectance. These are compared with laboratory results obtained from in situ water samples. An autonomous above-water radiometry system HYperspectral Pointable System for Terrestrial and Aquatic Radiometry (HYPSTAR®) was installed in early 2026, and satellite data from the currently operating Sentinel-2 and Landsat missions were collected. Temporal patterns in water-leaving radiance reflectance spectra, as well as variations in Chl-a and SPM over the measurement period are investigated. A comparison between in situ and satellite reflectance shows reasonable agreement, and the causes of the differences are explored.
