ABSTRACT 1221 | POSTER 80

REMOTE SENSING OF LAKE GARDA: SUPPORTING FUTURE SATELLITE MISSIONS AND MEETING WATER MANAGEMENT NEEDS

Garda is the largest Italian lake; it is a deep basin, with relevant communities of macrophytes distributed in the shallow waters. The lake is predominantly oligotrophic, though it is showing some tendencies towards mesotrophic conditions. For over two decades, the lake has been a key site for remote sensing of water quality, supporting algorithms developing and testing and a variety of environmental studies. In this study, the most recent research activities conducted at the lake, both for supporting the development of two future satellite missions and for addressing user needs related to the water management, are presented; in particular: i) methods performance to retrieve sun-induced fluorescence for the potential use of FLEX for water applications and; ii) application of semi-analytical modelling to CHIME-like data for classifying the fractional cover of substrates, including invasive species. Then, chlorophyll-a and kd derived from Sentinel-2 and OLCI time-series are analysed, both to understand the lake response to climate change and to support the regional authority monitoring needs; the latter also thanks to an online visualisation tool, integrated with in situ observations and ecological models. The use of SAR is finally showed to characterise wind fields and hydrodynamic modelling. Analysis of field data, gathered from HYPERNETS and a FLOX spectroradiometer, are presented to support the calibration/validation activities performed to implement the presented studies. Through this presentation we aim to emphasise the role that long-studied sites, such as Lake Garda, can play in advancing bio-optical algorithms and integrated Earth observation (EO) approaches for inland waters.
