COASTAL DARKENING – IMPACT ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES IN IRISH COASTAL WATERS
Current work in the JPI-Oceans project ISOLUME is focused on examining the potential role of coastal darkening on photosynthesis and the photochemical production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in marine waters along the Irish west coast and in the Celtic Sea. This work builds on recent bio-optical and biogeochemical data collected as part of iCRAG and the EPA/MI funded project NUTS&BOLTS which have provided new insights into the controls on light dynamics in this region and how light can shape local ecosystems. Hydro-light modelling of the light fields governed by the measured optical properties are combined with action spectrum for photosynthesis and ROS production to examine possible future scenarios under multi-environmental stressors, including coastal darkening and global warming. Assessing potential temporal changes in coastal darkening in Irish waters is challenging due to the lack of historical data. Utilising what data is already available, principally in terms of infrequent Secchi disk measurements and more recent satellite derived data products has allowed a first glimpse into what changes have occurred over the last 30-40 years. A period during which there have been major changes on land regarding the modification of Irish peatlands, principally through the mechanized extraction of peat and it’s subsequent phasing out. Our wider objective is to examine the potential role of coastal darkening, and bio-optics in general, on phytoplankton and macro algae photosynthesis in framing marine ecosystems in Irish waters.
