VALIDATION AND REQUIREMENTS VERIFICATION OF HYPERSPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING REFLECTANCE FROM THE PACE OCEAN COLOR INSTRUMENT (OCI): A MULTI-SOURCE ASSESSMENT
The NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission (launched 8 February 2024) carries the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), a hyperspectral scanning radiometer providing continuous spectral coverage from 315 to 895 nm at 2.5 nm sampling intervals. This study presents a comprehensive post-launch validation and formal requirements verification of OCI-derived remote sensing reflectance Rrs(λ) (Version 3.2) using 1,073 quality-controlled satellite-to-in situ matchups from three distinct sources: AERONET-OC fixed-platform radiometers (N = 598), SeaBASS hyperspectral field campaigns (N = 178), and SeaBASS multispectral field campaigns (N = 297), spanning March 2024 to November 2025. Requirements verification follows PACE SRD Table 2, specifying Threshold and Baseline accuracy tiers for water-leaving reflectance ρw(λ) = π × Rrs(λ) as the 50th-percentile absolute error |Δρw| over deep ocean (depth > 1000 m). Using this metric, all assessed wavelengths satisfy the absolute Threshold criterion; UV bands (350–385 nm) additionally satisfy the absolute. The results indicated that the Rrs product fully meet and exceed the baseline requirements with significant margin, not only for deep waters, but also for all available matchups.
