A DASHBOARD FOR THE AUTOMATED DETECTION AND MAPPING OF BLOOM FORMING REGIONS TO MONITOR WATER QUALITY USING PACE OCI

Phytoplankton blooms play critical roles in ocean ecosystems as they form the base of marine food webs, transport carbon to depth, and turn potentially hazardous depending on the dominant species and concentration of the bloom. The NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission’s Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) provides near continuous two-day global coverage of the ocean. Measurements of ocean color by OCI are used to estimate chlorophyll-a concentrations that serve as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, and changes in these concentrations can further be used to characterize bloom dynamics. Given the role of phytoplankton blooms in marine ecosystems, the early detection and monitoring of them are essential for both scientific and stakeholder communities. Consistent bloom detection is challenging, however, due to the high volume of data from the mission and the risk of geographic selection bias if the blooms are manually flagged. Here, we present an automated near real-time dashboard to detect potential bloom forming regions using PACE-derived chlorophyll-a anomalies. The dashboard displays a suite of mapped optical and biogeochemical PACE data products for potential blooms to enable rapid assessment and more informed decision making. We highlight several examples that demonstrate the utility of the dashboard, including two mesoscale bloom events along the Pacific Coast of the US and Costa Rica. We anticipate this tool will serve as a starting point for targeted phytoplankton bloom studies, reduce geographic selection bias, and support the continuous monitoring and understanding of water quality across the ocean.
