UNVEILING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYTOPLANKTON AND PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON IN THE GLOBAL OCEAN VIA SATELLITE DATA

Phytoplankton communities proliferate in the surface layer of the global ocean and are responsible for primary production as well as contributing to the oceanic carbon pool. Chlorophyll-a (Chla) is widely used as a proxy of phytoplankton biomass; however, it represents only the photosynthetic compartment of these cells. Particulate organic carbon (POC), on the other hand, includes both living and non-living materials in the water columns. The ratio POC:Chla therefore serves as a diagnostic indicator of carbon accumulation, potentially providing insights into the biogeochemical roles of different phytoplankton groups. In this study, we assessed the global variability of POC:Chla ratio using MODIS-Aqua remote sensing data from 2003 to 2023, and investigate how phytoplankton community composition and environmental conditions such as PAR and MLD regulate this variability. Self-organizing map (SOM) approach was applied to identify different oceanic regimes, and in-situ observations from BIOSOPE data set were used to support the interpretation of the underlying biological mechanisms. Our results reveal distinct oceanic biomes characterized by different POC:Chla ratio and community structures, providing new insights into the processes governing the relationship between phytoplankton biomass and POC in the surface ocean.
